Contemporary calligraphy artist Jameson Yap's second solo exhibition, Mindfulness, showcases his trademark expressive and emotional brushwork.

Jameson Yap’s calligraphy is unmistakable. As covered by BASKL in a previous story at the time of his first solo exhibition last October, Yap is something of a trailblazer. Eschewing the conventions set by tradition, Yap’s style is free-flowing with the Chinese characters he paints bleeding into each other or swelling past the frame’s limits. It is this very flexibility and this unique style that would have his work labelled as transgressive by the old masters, that lends his work its expressiveness. One can read the emotions emanating from Yap’s strokes at a glance.
Now, Yap has launched his second solo exhibition at Eslite Spectrum, the Starhill. Yap’s pop-up exhibition has created a space where fans of calligraphy are able to immerse themselves in his work and reflect on how the art makes them feel. “I’m grateful that this time I have the chance to present my art in a place like this,” Yap says. “So I made them on a bigger scale.” Titled Mindfulness, 30 pieces of artwork have been curated around the theme. Among the pieces are a poem by the renowned ancient poet Du Fu, a poem by Su Shi about the famous battle of Red Cliff, and the Heart Sutra, all 260 characters depicted over two separate pieces.
“Always start with love,” Yap says, describing his process of creation. He indicates the centrepiece of the exhibition, an eye-catching work depicting the Chinese characters for the phrase “letting go”, saying, “I hope that upon entering, audiences will first be captivated by this piece. This matches the theme, which is mindfulness, the hope that visitors can let go of their problems or whatever they carry within them, and start to reflect on the strokes and energy of my work. If any of the work connects with you on a deeper level, spend a bit more time with it, it might have some healing effects on you.
“I think this is the purpose of why I do this. It’s not to only showcase the aesthetic, but also to provide an environment within the city where people can have a quiet time and let go, and just be mindful.” Yap’s calligraphy is palpably emotional. Some of the characters in his work seem to huddle together in solidarity, conveying strength in harmony and unity. Others, with their blurred lines, seem to vibrate with energy. According to him, some visitors have spent hours in quiet reflection with the art, and have emerged rejuvenated afterwards.
During the media presentation, Yap demonstrated his technique before an audience. After spending several moments in quiet contemplation, Yap took to the canvas with flowing, unhesitating strokes. The final result was full of his signature style and clearly demonstrated his reverence for the art form.
Mindfulness will be on display at Eslite Spectrum, the Starhill until 30 June 2023. Follow Jameson Yap on his Instagram to see more of his art.
