A new multiverse unleashed in The Flash

By SHAH SHAMSHIRI

Superheroes continue to rule the silver screen as more and more characters from the comic world are brought to life for visual pleasure. The latest to enthrall viewers is probably one of DC Universe’s fastest man, The Flash.

Played by the eccentric Ezra Miller, The Flash’s first solo movie is definitely not a disappointment. After making waves through his appearance in The Justice League just a few years ago (and also through the television series, played by Grant Gustin), Earth’s fastest man gets to share his life story and how he came to be.

As every superhero group has their token comedian, The Flash seems to live up to his image as the funny guy for the Justice League. In this particular adventure, Barry Allen who already has a somewhat steady job has to deal with the everyday chore of saving the world and being on time for work.

Torn between keeping his secret identity as The Flash, fighting crime and trying to save his father from being charged for his late-mother’s death, Barry tries to slow his pace in figuring out how to balance all these problems.

With help from his other comrades of the Justice League, Barry continues to do what he can despite feeling that he is the ‘least’ important member of the group.

This time however, in his pursuit of trying to save the world, Barry accidentally unlocks a new life-changing skill from his powers of superspeed. Unbeknownst to him, Barry learns that he is capable of travelling through time as his superspeed is accelerated to an unearthly level.

This then gives him an idea to go back in time to save his mother from dying and his father from being arrested.

He is however advised by the current Batman played by Ben Affleck to ditch the idea as it will prove catastrophical and harm the balance of existence. Not heeding Batman’s sound advice, Barry uses his scientific knowledge of quantum physics and his superpowers to attempt the feat.

Thinking that he succeeded in travelling back in time before the moment of his mother’s death, Barry tries to do what he can by changing the incidents which led to his mother’s fatal end.

It is only then that he realises, he did not only travel back in time but entered a totally different timeline and reality. In this different reality, Barry then discovers that there are several universes existing all at once and that he is trapped in one of the many realities.

Though audience may find some similarities seen in Marvel’s Doctor Strange and Spiderman’s multiverse theme, this Flash flick has its fair share of surprises.

Stay tuned for cameos from some ‘Batmen’ of the past as Micheal Keaton and George Clooney make their appearances alongside Superman of the past and present as well as his cousin Supergirl who serves up quite the punch.

The Flash is currently showing in all Malaysian cinemas since June 15th 2023.
