Malaysia is well known for its melting pot of cultures, a characteristic personified by the Peranakan heritage that dates back to colonial times. This October, the rich history and identity will be brought to life on stage in Peranakan: A Musical Legacy, a fundraising concert presented by Somerset Music that combines the talents of its performers with the caring efforts of The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) and World Vision Malaysia.
A Vision of Heritage and Community

The production is helmed by Joanne Poh, Principal of Somerset Music, who also serves as its Director and Producer. She explained that the concert is more than just a performance. “What began as a vision to honour the beauty and resilience of Peranakan culture has grown into a musical celebration of identity, artistry, and shared memory. This production is more than just a concert. It is a tribute to the voices, colours, and traditions that shaped generations.”
The concert aims to create an immersive and communal experience. “Through familiar melodies, timeless pantun, and scenes inspired by everyday life, we invite the audience to rediscover the richness of our heritage,” Poh added. She also mentioned there will be singalong moments woven throughout the show, inviting the audience to participate not just as observers, but as part of the community, hoping to bring to life the spirit of togetherness through shared music and laughter.
Inspiring Voices Take the Stage

At the heart of the performance are the singers from the NASOM Maestros, Malaysia’s very first autism spectrum choir, which was established in 2010. Poh’s relationship with the group is a long-standing one, as she has served as the vocal teacher for the NASOM Maestros since 2012. Over the years, the choir has evolved into a distinguished ensemble that performs publicly with remarkable confidence, dignity, and a strong sense of self-worth in every appearance.
A Legacy of Giving
The president of NASOM, Mohd Nazrul Mohd Amin shared the deep significance of this event for the performers, stating, “For the NASOM Maestros Choir members, this concert provides more than just a stage. It is a chance to be seen, heard, and celebrated alongside their neurotypical peers.” He further added, “Their voices don’t just sing, they inspire! They break barriers. They remind us that ability knows no bounds.” Funds raised for NASOM will go towards supporting their vital autism-focused education and therapy programs.

The concert’s other co-beneficiary is World Vision Malaysia. “We are honoured to be part of this meaningful production that not only celebrates the richness of Peranakan heritage through music and storytelling, but also reflects a deep commitment to social responsibility,” stated Adrian Tham, Channel Marketing Manager of World Vision Malaysia.
Support raised for the organization will be directed towards their Malaysia Assistance Fund, which addresses urgent local needs such as providing education, health, and nutrition support to vulnerable children and equipping parents with livelihood skills. Tham added, “This spirit resonates strongly with our mission of creating a more compassionate and just world for all.”

Experience the Musical
Audiences can look forward to an evening filled with well-loved folk melodies like Rasa Sayang, Chan Mali Chan, and Bengawan Solo, set against a rustic backdrop of kampung scenes and the warmth of family. The event is supported by community partners Nusantara Performing Arts Research Centre (NUSPARC) and The Giddy Nyonya. In a final invitation, Poh shared, “Come for the music, stay for the memories, and leave with your heart just a little fuller.”
