“Be good or the boogeyman will come and haunt you!” A phrase that many parents often tell their children when they want them to be on their best behaviour. Well, Disney recently released The Boogeyman and has been haunting cinemas this past month. Not the first with the same title, this time however will be the first Boogeyman under the Disney group through their recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
The story opens after the death of local therapist Dr Harper’s wife, who leaves behind a husband and two school-going daughters. While surviving through grief as a family, they face communication breakdowns and the two young girls felt abandoned.
They were feeling as though their dad is never there for them as he keeps all of the grief and sadness to himself. One day, Dr Harper suddenly receives a very peculiar patient who storms into his home office crying out for help saying that he has been followed by a mystical entity.
Full of fear and pain in his eyes, Lester Billings pleaded Dr Harper to help save him but the poor Dr brushed him away saying that he doesn’t really take in patients without an appointment. Left hanging without a clue of what is going on in his life, Billings was then found dead in Dr Harper’s house minutes after the two of them spoke to each other.
Question is, why and what killed Lester and how did he die? The two little girls Sadie and Sawyer Harper came home from school shocked and puzzled with the mystery and things started becoming worse in the coming days.
Apart from the goosebumps and fearful sensations that the movie leaves onto us, Boogeyman also portrays the importance of surrendering to grief and to embrace the emotions of sadness within us. Pain and challenges are inevitable in our life but how we maneuver and overcome these hurdles is the most important thing.
Communication between loved ones is also very important as no one deserves to feel lonely in life. Everyone deserves to be happy, not with having everything we want but to be happy with everything that we have.
Catch The Boogeyman in cinemas nearby or if going to the movies to watch a horror flick isn’t usually your cup of tea, then check the movie out when it comes out on Disney+ soon!
