Pesta TUT by Freedom Film Network
Pesta TUT “Tak Usah Tutup-Tutup” is a curation of creative events to enable the public to reflect and engage in a discussion with one another on our shared concerns, priorities and aspirations with regards to film censorship. It is a part of Freedom Film Network’s “Bebaskan Filem, Merdekakan Minda” movement.
When spoken aloud, TUT (or toot) connotes a word that is inappropriate/ censored out. It also stands for “Tak Diluluskan Untuk Tayangan”, a classification for films that are banned from public screenings by the Lembaga Penapisan Filem. This festival advocates for an alternate TUT – “Tak Usah Tutup-Tutup” – not necessary to censor.
The way we consume information and films have changed in the era of the internet and streaming but film regulation in Malaysia has not caught up – severely impacting the freedom of expression of filmmakers and creating unnecessary obstacles to the growth of our film industry.
Equally as important, we believe that the current system does not effectively protect public interest and, on the contrary, could be restricting our right and freedom to access critical information and content through films.
