Of Spaces In Between
Description
This April 2023, art visitors across Penang and Klang Valley will be given the opportunity to experience the concept of duality when they visit Of Spaces in Between, an exhibition hosted simultaneously at two gallery spaces – Hin Bus Depot, Penang, and at ZHAN Art | Space, Petaling Jaya. Curated by Penang-based artist Ivan Gabriel, the exhibition will feature 24 artists, each of whom has created two different but complementary artworks based on the theme ‘duality’, to be displayed in the two spaces respectively.
With the help of the augmented reality app ‘Perk Reality’, visitors to Hin Bus Depot will be able to see in ‘real’ time the artworks that are exhibited at ZHAN Art | Space, while those in Klang Valley can experience the artworks shown in Penang without having to make a trip up North.
“Utilising the technology available, we are able to present two different artworks – one physical and one augmented; to create a harmonious dialogue and illustrate how duality is an ever-present theme in our lives, affecting every aspect of our existence,” shares Ivan.
Desmond Tong, Found and Curator of ZHAN Art | Space, is excited to be one of the two venue partners for the exhibition.
“In the age of digitalisation and artificial intelligence, we are excited to bring in technology as part of an immersive art exhibition alongside Hin Bus Depot, Penang. Of Spaces in Between is a visual feast for the senses that celebrates diversity, multiplicity, and complexity in the human experience. We hope that viewers are inspired by the curated works, and be awed by the possibilities of modernity,” says Desmond.
Penang Art District played a vital role in this exhibition, connecting Hin Bus Depot and ZHAN Art | Space, and on a wider scale, Penang and art institutions in Klang Valley. Kenny Ng, Project Manager of Penang Art District shares that “the goal and hope of this collaboration is to promote and showcase the diversity and quality of contemporary art produced in Penang and Klang Valley. It aims to foster a greater appreciation for contemporary art among the public, and to encourage dialogue and exchange of ideas among artists, curators, and audiences across Malaysia.”
