The culmination of the SEM/ALAM Art Lab, EPISTOLARISTICS is a visual arts exhibition featuring the works of 6 unique Orang Asal artists on the intersections of contemporary art, filmmaking, performance, and embroidery. It is another meaningful effort to give representation to Orang Asal via arts and culture while helping them reassert their identity and belonging to the greater Malaysian identity.

The SEM/ALAM Art Lab is an art incubation programme initiated by Alfonse Chiu (@centreforurbanmythologies) as part of Glossaries for Unwritten Knowledges (GfUK). Co-presented with @gerimis_my, SEM/ALAM Art Lab is a developmental platform that focuses on screen-based media with the aim to cultivate greater critical visual literacy for Orang Asal artists and creators. By bringing together emerging Orang Asal artists and diverse expert mentors in a robust film programme, SEM/ALAM exposes its participants to different ways of creating and working with the moving image.

EPISTOLARISTICS features Tiyan Baker, Albert Bansa, Jesse Joy, Ashly Nandong and Charles Rentap McLean (as a duo), and Mariane. The curation and presentation of their work is inspired by the literary format of the epistolary novel and speculates on the idea of indigenous histories and identities as a practice of epistolaristics.
