Yoong Chia’s upcoming exhibition, A Leaf Through History amongst other things, unearths Malaysia’s scarred past. The Japanese invasion was somehow casually done on bicycles on the palm strewn beaches of Kelantan. Just as casually, the brutal occupation was littered with decapitations of heads with the Chinese community especially persecuted. The elements of kelapa and kepala in the gaily colours of the batik is a piece of storytelling that deconstructs the batik medium to contain serious narratives and reminders of our past through Yoong Chia’s eyes and identity.
