Let’s talk about Merdeka 118. It’s not just Malaysia’s tallest building; it’s a symbol of our ambition and modernity. Standing tall as the second-tallest building in the world, it’s a true architectural marvel. And now, it’s stepping into the limelight of international cinema. In Thunderbolts*, audiences will witness a breathtaking action sequence featuring the talented Florence Pugh, known for her roles in Black Widow and Little Women, as Yelena Belova. Imagine this: Yelena, in a heart-stopping stunt, leaping off the 678.9-meter-tall skyscraper. The scene promises to capture stunning, sweeping views of Kuala Lumpur, showcasing our city’s beauty and energy to a global audience.  

This is a huge moment of pride for Malaysians. Seeing Merdeka 118 on the big screen in a Marvel movie is going to be incredibly exciting. It’s a chance for us to recognize and celebrate our city’s landmarks in a whole new context. It also puts Kuala Lumpur firmly on the map for film enthusiasts and travelers, highlighting our city as a vibrant and dynamic location for international productions.

Beyond Merdeka 118, Thunderbolts* offers viewers a glimpse of familiar faces and places around Kuala Lumpur. Marvel Studios’ decision to film in our city demonstrates their commitment to showcasing authentic settings and collaborating with local talent. This collaboration extended to working with Malaysian production teams and featuring local actors, including the talented Syaza Atheera. This inclusion not only enriches the film but also provides valuable opportunities for the Malaysian film industry, fostering growth and recognition on an international scale.  

Behind the Stunts

Creating those jaw-dropping action sequences is no easy feat. Director Jake Scheier emphasized the importance of teamwork and safety in bringing these scenes to life. “The stunts for this film were an incredible team effort,” he shared. “We consulted with Malaysian engineering firms to ensure the stunt’s safety, especially in how the equipment was designed”. This meticulous planning and attention to detail highlight the complexity of filmmaking and the dedication required to execute such ambitious scenes.  

Scheier also praised Florence Pugh’s commitment and skill. “We focused on the base jump first before moving onto the stunt in full. Florence had to perform the stunt fully in character, with no cuts in between—she was so committed and pulled it off perfectly”. Pugh’s dedication to her role and her ability to perform such a demanding stunt adds another layer of excitement and authenticity to the film.  

Celebrating with Light

To commemorate the release of Thunderbolts*, Merdeka 118 will be transformed into a dazzling tribute to the film. From April 29th to May 1st, the iconic building will be illuminated with a special Thunderbolts* theme, creating a spectacular visual experience for everyone in Kuala Lumpur. Make sure to catch the nightly light show, running from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM. It’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Malaysia’s moment in the global spotlight and witness Merdeka 118 in a whole new light. Imagine the city skyline ablaze with color and energy, a fitting tribute to Marvel’s unconventional heroes.  

Meet the Thunderbolts*

Now, let’s delve into the heart of the movie: the Thunderbolts themselves. This isn’t your typical superhero team. Marvel Studios has assembled a group of antiheroes, each with their own complex pasts and motivations. Leading the pack is Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), a skilled and formidable assassin. She’s joined by Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), also known as the Winter Soldier, a character with a troubled history and a quest for redemption. The team also includes Red Guardian (David Harbour), a powerful and charismatic figure; Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), an enigmatic character with phasing abilities; Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), a formidable foe who can mimic any fighting style; and John Walker (Wyatt Russell), a character grappling with his own sense of justice and patriotism.  

The catalyst for this unlikely alliance is Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a mysterious and influential figure who ensnares them in a dangerous mission. These disillusioned castoffs are forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, facing challenges that will test their limits and push them to the brink. The central question of the film revolves around their ability to overcome their differences and unite as a team. Will their dysfunctional dynamics tear them apart, or will they find redemption and forge a new identity as something much more before it’s too late?  

The Cast and Crew:

Thunderbolts* boasts an impressive ensemble cast, bringing these complex characters to life. Alongside Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, David Harbour, and Hannah John-Kamen, the film also stars Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, and Wendell Pierce, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus adding her signature flair to the mix.  

The film is directed by Jake Schreier, known for his work on “Robot & Frank” and “Paper Towns,” bringing his unique vision to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind the MCU, serves as producer, ensuring the film’s place within the larger narrative. Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, and Jason Tamez serve as executive producers, contributing their expertise to the project. The screenplay, crafted by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, with the story by Eric Pearson, promises a compelling narrative filled with action, intrigue, and emotional depth.
