Datuk Kong worship is a very common belief in Malaysia and is often openly associated with the ethnic Chinese. While this human-spirit relationship can manifest in different forms, it is said to be a reflection of religious syncretism among many communities in Southeast Asia. Based on Chinese epigraphical materials and other primary sources, the talk discusses the origin and function of Datuk Kong worship in Malaysia.
