12tone Ensemble presents ‘Dream Tryst’, an exploration of poetry in Choral Music

After a stunning first concert held last December, 12tone Ensemble returns with their second concert production, entitled Dream Tryst.

The choir has chosen compositions that Malaysian audiences will have rarely seen performed before. Highlights of the programme include 2 notable works – Fern Hill by Oscar and Grammy Award-winning American composer John Corigliano, plus Rejoice in the Lamb by renowned British composer Benjamin Britten. Other than that, expect to hear Gustav Holst’s Five Part-Songs, in addition to other pieces from Messiaen and Hawley.

Corigliano’s Fern Hill is derived from the classic poem by Welshman Dylan Thomas, a writer most well known for Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night. Corigliano’s piece brings to life Thomas’ childhood growing up on a rural Welsh farm, his emotional composition recreating the feelings evoked by the poem.

Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb is inspired by the poem Jubilate Agno, written by 18th-century English poet Christopher Smart. The poem was written when Smart was confined in an asylum. Britten’s creative and unique composition brings out the idiosyncratic yet devotional nature of Smart’s poem.

Gustav Holst’s 5 Part-Songs (H. 61, Op. 12) is the British composer’s 2nd collection of 5 folksongs, arranged during the English Folksong revival movement in the early 20th Century. Known primarily for his orchestral suite The Planets, Holst’s beautifully written choral repertoire remains relatively underexplored.

12tone Ensemble was founded in 2023 by Music Director, Caeleb Tee. This semi-professional project-based ensemble works primarily on classical choral repertoire and is composed of experienced choristers from all across the Klang Valley. Accompanying the choir on piano will be Steinway Artist, Zhang Chi.

12tone Ensemble’s Dream Tryst will be held for one night only, on the May 21, 2024, at the Kong Choi Exhibition Room, KL Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall. Tickets are priced at RM88 and can be purchased at this link.
